UBITEM is an engineering initiative by Dr. Murat KOÇAK, whose background combines academic research with engineering, scientific instrumentation, and the development of specialized technical systems.

He completed both his Master’s and PhD studies with High Honors. During his doctoral studies, he developed two patents in the fields of electro-optics and optomechatronics, introducing novel concepts aimed at enhancing the efficiency of observational astronomy. These achievements were also recognized by the University Senate and contributed to subsequent changes in the university’s academic regulations.

At TÜBİTAK National Observatory, he established an electronics R&D laboratory and, together with the personnel he trained, carried out maintenance, repair, and research and development activities for scientific and observatory systems.

He is also the author of a book compiling software solutions designed to overcome hardware limitations in telescopes. The work focuses on increasing observational efficiency, automated status monitoring of hardware, classification of scientific images and data, systematic academic and technical reporting, establishing operational standards for observational astronomy, and providing an infrastructure for statistical analysis.

His professional experience includes international technical assignments in:

Málaga, Spain: Presentation of patented research and scientific developments at an international conference
Copenhagen, Denmark: Investigation and evaluation of technical specification requirements for spectrometer systems
Potsdam / Berlin, Germany: Presentation of developed meteorological stations and robotic telescope dome systems at an international conference
Tucson, Arizona, USA: Technical specification compliance and acceptance testing of a fully automated telescope
Iowa City, Iowa, USA: Technical acceptance testing of a robotic telescope
Lecco, Italy: Consultancy during the factory acceptance testing of a major astronomical telescope

His engineering work included the development of Türkiye’s first CCD camera specifically designed for astronomical observation, at a time when such cameras were exclusively sourced from abroad. His work has also included the design and production of meteorological systems capable of operating under harsh environmental conditions, and the robotic conversion of a large-aperture astronomical telescope dome. Some of these works have been presented at international scientific and technical meetings and documented in scientific publications.

Core expertise spans scientific instrumentation, optics, electronics, robotics, optomechatronics, software, automation, and environmental monitoring, bringing together research, engineering, and practical field implementation.
